It is made from the Nebbiolo grape variety in the communes of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and parts of the communes of Cherasco, Diano d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Novello, Roddi and Verduno (all in the province of Cuneo). Only hillside vineyards with the correct orientation and slopes are considered suitable production and the terrain must be primarily calcareous clay. Barolo typically smells of pine, tar and roses and can take on an orange tinge with age. When aged for at least five years, it can be labeled a Riserva.
