1978 Italian Wines - Red
Rated 5 stars by Michael Broadbent, 1978 was considered to be the 'best all round vintage of the decade'. |
|
| Barbera d'Alba "La Castella", Rossello 1978 (75cl) Condition: Excellent levels. Labels slightly bin soiled with some niks and minor tears (from racking), though all details clearly legible (please see Large Image). Signs of some sediment so this wine will need to be left for 24 hours (to allow it to settle) and opened and poured carefully (or decanted).
Great price for a 1978 Italian!

| Nebbiolo d'Alba, Rosello 1978 D.O.C. (72cl) Condition: Levels Into Neck, though labels are showing signs of cellaring - see note below.
NOTE: The levels and colour of these wines are superb and reflect excellent cellaring. Sadly, some of the labels are partially disintegrated, though please do not let this put you off, especially as all relevant details (including the vintage) are clearly legible. It is not uncommon in cellars with good humidity for labels to deteriorate over time and if anything, this can add to the overall appeal.

| Barbaresco, Vignaioli Elvio Pertinace 1978 D.O.C. (75cl) Condition: Excellent levels and pristine labels with individually numbered bottles. Signs of some sediment so this wine will need to be left for 24 hours (to allow it to settle) and opened and poured very carefully (or decanted).
NOTE: Cantina Vignaioli Elvio Pertinace was founded in Pertinace, a hamlet on the outskirts of the village of Treiso, in 1972 when its first president, Mario Barbero, and twelve other grower friends decided to join forces, properties and experience in a cooperative aimed at exploiting the full potential of their vineyards to produce high quality wines. Their Barbarescos are magnificent, noble and austere, fine dry reds made by vinifying perfectly ripe grapes grown in old vineyards with particularly fine wine-growing features. They are very well structured with a good alcohol content and great balance.

| Barbaresco, Giordano 1978 (75cl) Condition: Excellent level and good clean label. Signs of some sediment so this wine will need to be left for 24 hours (to allow it to settle) and opened and poured very carefully (or decanted).
Note: Generally more feminine and elegany than Barolo, Barbaresco has great suppleness, softer fruit and a more obvious charm.
