1981 Wines

With 30 years careful cellaring, a bottle of 1981 wine makes the perfect wedding gift or 30th birthday present. 1981 was a good vintage, particulalrly for Bordeaux wines. The weather conditions were advantageous with early flowering in hot, dry weather which continued throughout the summer with a sprinkling of rain in September to swell the grapes with harvesting late September/early October. 1981 wines are drinking well now and would grace the table of any 30th anniversary or birthday event.

Château Lafite Rothschild 1981 (75cl)Château Lafite Rothschild 1981 (75cl)

Pauillac, 1er Cru (First Growth)

Condition: Level well into neck. Label has a tear down the centre though all details are clearly legible.

Robert Parker 91 points:
This wine is close to full maturity, but it is capable of holding for another two decades. It reveals the classic Lafite bouquet of red and black fruits, cedar, fruitcake, and tobacco-like aromas. In the mouth, this medium ruby/garnet-colored wine displays a delicacy of fruit and sweet attack, but subtle, well-defined flavors ranging from tobacco, cigar box, cedar, and fruitcake. This is a savory, soft Lafite-Rothschild that is pleasing to both the intellect and the palate. Anticipated maturity: Now-2018. Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1 Jan 1998

Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1981, SALMANAZAR (9L)Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1981, SALMANAZAR (9L)

9 Litre Salmanazar

Condition: Impeccable, presented in its own wooden case, a limited edition bottle numbered 37 of 150 and signed by the legendary Ed Sbargia, winemaker at Beringer. To our knowledge, this is the last bottle of this size available in the world.

Notes: This was the first vintage of Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Last tasted in Jan 2007, it is still, in Ed Sbragia'a words, "One of the biggest, baddest wines we ever put in the bottle". With numerous other superb reviews, this is undoubtably one of our finest wines. We contacted Beringer direct to gen up and they were equally impressed.

Equivalent to 12 bottles, the price is very low for a wine of this age, pedigree and rarety, working out at under £83 per bottle (current prices in the US are as much as double this). Being, such a large format, the wine will have also aged much more slowly than a standard size bottle, making it suitable for drinking or cellaring.
