| Château La Lagune Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2006 Producer A Third Growth (3ème Cru Classé), Château La Lagune has ridden the vicissitudes of fashion that have swept over the Médoc in the past 30 years. Now owned by the Frey family, La Lagune has seen a return to form, brought about by lower yields and better work in the vineyard. It is the southernmost classed growth in the Médoc and one of just five in the 1855 classification lying outside the main communes of St Estèphe, St Julien, Pauillac and Margaux. The 80 hectares of vineyards are planted on gravel slopes with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.
Vintage Information The 2006 vintage was marked by unusual contrasting weather and required much attention to assist the vines to withstand and support the challenging weather conditions. Until the end of July, the grapes matured well but then August saw the return of cooler weather and the lack of sunshine and rain slowed down the process of maturing. Thinning of the leaves and green harvest was done to prevent any grey rot during the harvest. With temperatures well above average during the first 15 days of September, this enabled sppedy maturation.
Vinification The harvest started on the 16th September. The grapes were harvested on the 24th September. The Merlot and Petit Verdot were fermented at 30°C and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc at 28°C for between 3-4 weeks to achieve maximum fruit aromas and softer tannins.
Tasting Notes Bright red in colour with aromas of red fruit, damsons and plums. It is medium to full bodied, with generous red fruit intensity and a ripe, medium tannin finish. 2006 was characterised by sweet, forward fruit and balance after the heat and power of 2005 and 2005.
Press "Sweet plum and red and black currant fruit, intermixed with notes of resiny pine forest and forest floor as well as a hint of barrique, are followed by a wine with gorgeous depth, an attractive, mediumbodied texture, a fresh, poised personality, and a moderately long finish. This is another beauty, not weighty, but pure, savoury, and capable of lasting 15 or more years, although it is accessible already." 91 points, Robert Parker, Feb 2009
