DA VINCI Brunello di Montalcino 2004

The Da Vinci wines are produced at Cantine Leonardo and are a
step up in quality and price on the Leonardo Chianti and Riserva.
Winemaker Riccardo Pucci has worked hard with Leonardo.s
viticulturists to develop a style of Chianti that builds on the freshness
and vibrancy characterising Leonardo. This has resulted in deeper
coloured and richer wines, thanks in part to the oak used in the
maturation process, which stand out against their peers.
The grapes are sourced from the small hillside in the commune of
Montalcino, near Siena, where the soil has been formed by centuries
of accumulated sild and clay sandstone. Splintered shale, commonly
known as marn, is the primary soil component. The deep and
permeable soil is good at retaining water.
2004 is considered to be one of the best ever Montalcino vintages
with abundant spring rainfall boosting the soil.s water reserves.
Summer was long, dry and hot and the sunny, breezy weather
continued right up until picking in October.
Maceration and fermentation lasted approximately 15-20 days
together with frequent but gentle pumping over. Fermentation
occurred in 100% stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 30-
32°C to ensure excellent colour and good tannins. After fermentation,
the wine was transferred to oak barrels where it aged for at least 2
years. After barrel ageing it spent an additional three years in bottle
before release.
Bright, purple-red in colour, with garnet lights, it is perfumed and
intense, with aromas of blackberries and cherries, with a touch of
leather and tobacco as the wine ages. On the palate it is full bodied
and powerful, with good depth, richness and structure.
