| HEINRICH Burgenland Blaufränkisch 2008 Producer Gernot Heinrich has 60 hectares of vines in Gols, Burgenland, which is Austria.s easternmost province, lying only a few kilometres from the Hungarian border. After graduating in viticulture from Klosterneuberg, Gernot.s vinous travels in Bordeaux, Spain, California and Italy convinced him that his best approach in this continental climate was to use indigenous grapes such as Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt to make the highest quality, most characteristic wines he could.
Vineyards In the Wagram area the hot, dry climate with sandy, clay soils facing south favour the production of ripe, opulent reds. A fresh, northeasterly prevailing wind ensures the relatively high rainfall in the area does not cause the grapes to rot. The vineyards are 140m above sea level, with St Laurent on the higher slopes and Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt on the heavier soils lower down. The oldest vines are 30 years old.
Vinification The grapes were hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard at the beginning of September. All movement of the juice was carried out by gravity. Extended maceration on the skins took place and was followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and wooden vats at 28-34°C. The wine aged in a mix of large oak vats and 2nd and 3rd use barriques.
Tasting Notes Bright ruby red in colour. On the nose this wine displays bright cherry and red fruit character with touches of spice. On the palate it is friutdriven, with soft, supple tannins which make it idael for early drinking.
