Winemaker, Chester's Osborne has his daughters Ruby and Alicia to thank for naming The Laughing Magpie; it is what they call their tame Kookaburra (a member of the Kingfisher family).

Upon release The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier has a vivid dark purple colour. The Viognier adds fragrance and the perfume of flowers, nectarines, ginger and herbs, serving to enhance the very ripe spectrum of the Shiraz, namely blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry.

These same characters are also evident on the palate and prevail with a smooth glycerol impact, following through to the mid palate with fruity tannin. The structure has an accent on fine structure and a gritty long fruit tannin.

"D'Arenberg continues to do exceptionally well with their newest offering, The Laughing Magpie. The inky/purple-colored 2001 (a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier) exhibits knock-out aromas of violets, blackberry liqueur, honeysuckle, and toasty new French oak. With extraordinary richness, full body, opulence, intensity, and a seamless as well as majestic finish this killer red will be at its finest between 2005-2018" Wine Advocate #143 (Oct 2002)
