QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA Douro Red 2005
Quinta da Romaneira was bought in 2004 by Christian Seely, who is
known for his extensive experience in running the renowned Quinta do
Noval. Since arriving in the Douro in the 1990s, it has been his dream to
own Quinta da Romaneira and restore the property to its former glory.
The estate is situated in the Cima Corgo district, in the heart of the
Douro Valley. The superb location, along 2km of the Douro River,
provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality wines, both
dry and fortified, from local varieties. All the vineyards for the reds are
classified .A. Grade; aromatic white varieties are grown at high
altitude for Romaneira.s delicious dry white wine.
81 hectares of vineyard have been replanted with the principal aim of
producing dry wines, and a small range of ports. The vineyards are
planted mainly with noble Douro varieties, and all 76 Ha of red grapes
are planted on .A. grade Douro Schist terraces. Yields are typically
very low, ranging from 20 . 25 hl/Ha. The vineyards are 20 years old.
After pressing the must was fermented, with occasional pumpovers,
in stainless steel vats with temperature control at 28ºC. The
wine was then aged in 100% French oak and bottled at the end of
July 2007.
Rich, complex and spicy, this is an intense and powerful red with
perfumes of red berries and spiced plums. On the palate it is structred
and spicy, with good structure and wild berry fruit characters.
Powerful but ripe, rounded tannins support the juicy fruit and long,
spicy finish.
"Firm and well-structured, this is filled with graphite, dark plum and dark
chocolate notes. The intense finish offers espresso and Asian spice. This
is a powerful yet graceful red from Portugal."
