d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 1999 (75cl) d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 1999 (75cl)

A classic vintage for d'Arenberg. VERY LIMITED STOCKS

Robert Parker 96 points:
"This estate's most renowned offering is their old vine Shiraz (90+ year old vines) called The Dead Arm. The unfined/unfiltered 1999 The Dead Arm Shiraz (2,000 cases) was aged in 100% new oak, of which 70% was American and 30% French. It is about as natural and unmanipulated a product of the vineyard as one can find. Full-bodied and awesomely rich, notes of black pepper, licorice, and blackberry as well as cherry liqueur cascade over the palate with enormous concentration and intensity, high tannin, and a structured, muscular style. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 2-3 decades. It is a timeless museum piece made in a style that can only be produced in Barossa or McLaren Vale. " Wine Advocate #143 (Oct 2002)

d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2000 (75cl) d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2000 (75cl)

A superb vintage for d'Arenberg. LIMITED STOCKS

Robert Parker 94 points:
"The unfined/unfiltered 2000 The Dead Arm Shiraz is one of South Australia’s finest wines of the vintage. A perfume of grilled steak intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, earth, pepper, and melted licorice rises from this awesome red. With great power, richness, and no hard edges, it is still young and primary, but should hit its peak in 3-7 years, and last for two decades or more.

Chester Osborn, the remarkable person behind this enormous array of both impeccably high quality and value-priced wines, deserves considerable accolades for what he is able to achieve at all price ranges. If you love Australian wines, d’Arenberg is a winery to seek out as these offerings all possess abundant soul as well as character. In short, the accolades that proprietor/winemaker Chester Osborn receives not only from The Wine Advocate, but virtually everybody in the wine world, are all well deserved. " Wine Advocate #148 (Aug 2003)

d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2001 (75cl) d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2001 (75cl)

The ultimate vintage for d'Arenberg. LIMITED STOCKS

Robert Parker 98 points:
"Readers should be on the look out for the 2001 The Dead Arm Shiraz, one of the greatest examples of this cuvee. Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by celestial aromas of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, incense, anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated, with great purity, an unctuous, viscous texture, and an amazingly long, 60-second plus finish, this fabulous baby will need 5-6 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 20-25 years." Wine Advocate #148 (Aug 2003)

Price:   £49.50 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2002 (75cl) d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2002 (75cl)

A superb vintage for d'Arenberg.

Robert Parker 93 points:
"The 2002 The Dead Arm Shiraz was a challenge to effectively analyze. After the magnificent 2001, it comes across as lighter-styled, more elegant, but also closed and restrained. Several hours of aeration were beneficial, but this cuvee seems to be playing it close to the vest. However, there is power underneath the tannic structure. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a backward, full-throttle Shiraz lacking the exuberance, unctuosity, and stunning concentration of the 2001 and 1998. It has noble breeding, but appears to be totally shut down at present. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020." Wine Advocate #155 (Oct 2004)

Price:   £26.50 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2003 (75cl) d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2003 (75cl)

A classic vintage for d'Arenberg.

Robert Parker 95 points:
"A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years." Wine Advocate #161 (Oct 2005)

Price:   £28.95 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

d'Arenberg Laughing Magpie 2003 (75cl) d'Arenberg Laughing Magpie 2003 (75cl)
Scoring an impressive 90 points from Robert Parker, "Not quite as successful as the brilliant 2001 and 2002, but still outstanding, the 2003 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier (94% of the former and 6% of the latter) is not as powerful or rich as its two older siblings. Nevertheless, it is an impressive red offering an exotic nose of lychee nuts, honeysuckle, apricot marmalade, blackberries, and cassis. Expressive, full-bodied, and soft, but more superficial than usual, it is a flamboyant effort to drink over the next 5-7 years." (Wine Advocate #155 Oct. 2004)

Price:   £15.58 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

d'Arenberg Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2002 (75cl) d'Arenberg Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2002 (75cl)
It is a black wine with a great purple hue. Intense, young purple fruits and flowers combine with meat, earth and fresh bitumen to yield an intense, extremely inviting aroma. The palate starts with a huge Wam! of flavour. Thick, ripe mulberries, blackberries and blueberries progress into a rich, gutsy, liquorish and bitumen palate, followed by masses of powerful, youthful, gritty fruit tannins, layered with tonnes of flowery, cranberry and dark fruit flavours, and a youhful acidity. This is a wine of intense concentration. With time, the tannins will somewhat soften and integrate as the fruit flavours open. The palate, while richer, further turns into avery fuill glycerol, chocolate, spicy and ripe fruit wine, with great length and acidity.

d'Arenberg The High Trellis 2002 (75cl) d'Arenberg The High Trellis 2002 (75cl)
As a young wine, the High Trellis Cabernet has a dense crimson red colour with purple tinges. The High Trellis has a typical young Cabernet Sauvignon attack on the nose; lifted violets, mint and capsicum Cabernet edges above a rich, ripe blackberry, plum and liquorice ash base. Typical cassis and blackcurrant aromas are also evident. A little smoky vanillin oak and cinnamon smells help to give the wine great complexity and longevity.

Serve at room temperature 16-24 deg C. now or cellar for 2-20 years with richly flavoured foods such as patés, duck roasts, vegetables and lamb. Pasta dishes especially with tomato or cream based sauces, also with veal, light and wax crusted soft cheeses. Serve after decanting as an older wine.

d'Arenberg Bonsai Vine 2001 (75cl) d'Arenberg Bonsai Vine 2001 (75cl)
'The Bonsai Vine' displays a dark reddish-purple colour in its youth. Aromas attack with spice, plum, red and black berry fruits, liquorice and black cherries. The palate shows mulberry, black pepper and ripe plums before a strong, lingering dark cherry spice and gritty fruit tannin finish. The Grenache and Shiraz components will develop together, with olive, complex spice and fruitcake flavours coming through. The Mourvedre component adds dried herbs and an iodine character thay stays, along with chalky tannins. This wine will continue to age well for many years. Its tannic structure will become softer while retaining full-bodied flavours and great fruit character.

d'Arenberg Custodian Grenache 2001 (75cl) d'Arenberg Custodian Grenache 2001 (75cl)
As a young wine, the Custodian shows a dark ruby purple hued colour and distinctive rich ripe lifted plum, cherry and deep blackcurrant aromas on top of lighter lolly- like violet, musk and raspberry smells, the essences of Grenache.

Touches of white pepper, tobacco, cinnamon and spice follow onto the medium to full-bodied juicy palate. The rich plum and sweet blackberry fruit flavours are lifted by gentle vanillin and coffee-mocha oak derived flavours and crunchy fine- grained fruit and oak tannins.

Serve at room temperature 16-24 deg C. now or cellar for the next 3-20 years with rich and highly flavoured foods, especially cured and roasted meats, particularly lamb, curries, chili dishes, full-flavoured casseroles and soft blue cheeses. Serve after decanting as an older wine.

Upon release, d'Arenberg's Galvo Garage has a deep, vibrant red-purple colour. The nose shows a complex array of blackcurrant, cassis, mulberries, dark plums, cherries and cut-flower stems. Subtle spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar add complexity and show a potential for the wine to open more with time.

"A killer wine, the sensational 1997 The Ironstone Pressings (70% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 10% Mourvedre) boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a spectacular black raspberry, kirsch, and licorice-scented nose, gorgeously full-bodied, super-concentrated flavors with nicely integrated, toasty oak, and fine acidity. Full-bodied, with high alcohol (15%), this is a blockbuster, New World, Rhône look-alike that can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years. Impressive!" Wine Advocate #127 (Feb 2000)
