Domaine de Tavernel - Vin de Pays du Gard
Thanks to Gerard, our intrepid wine connoisseur and sniffer hound, for finding this rather splendid, if somewhat functional winery (no fancy tasting rooms or guided tours here). Run by Denise Compagne and her father, this is one of the tightest ships we've come across in terms of attention to quality through all stages of production. A true organic and vegetarian wine which means the wine is free to reveal its true flavours and, for me, no hangover (usually caused by added sulphites).
These wines are truly exceptional. The first vintage of the 'Millesime' was declared in 2001 and it immediately scooped a Gold medal in the Paris Concours de Vin. The next vintage followed suit (this was the 2004 - the Millesime is only made in exceptional years) . The Red is our personal 'everyday' wine and there is always a bottle or two of the Rose and the White in the fridge.

GOLD MEDAL, Concours Amphore (Paris) 2006

Still a youngster when compared to the 2001, though a must for those prefer fruit-driven, powerful reds. Plenty of tannin and black fruits, this is a wine for rich food (red meat, cheese, strong tomato/pasta dishes) or for drinking in front of the fire on a cool evening. Personally, I think it will improve with a year's ageing, though Sue doesn't agree - but then she is a big fan of Aussie Shiraz and other up-front, powerful reds.

GOLD MEDAL, Concours General Agricole Paris 2007

Very full and still quite tight. One of our customers decribed this wine 'like a rose bud that opens up into a rich red flower'. I can only agree and recommend opening at least an hour before drinking or ideally, double decanting (into a jug, then back into the bottle).

Price:   £6.50 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)

Red - Mas Petit Azegat 2005 (75cl) Red - Mas Petit Azegat 2005 (75cl)

GOLD MEDAL, Concours General Agricole Paris 2006

From the makers of Domaine de Tavernel comes this new wine. The Mas Petit Azégat is an excellent and very typical Rhône red. An organic wine, it is particularly well-suited to roast dinners (particularly lamb).

White - Domaine de Tavernel 2006 (75cl) White - Domaine de Tavernel 2006 (75cl)

SILVER MEDAL, Concours General Agricole Paris 2007

A blend of Vermentino and Muscat Petit Grains, this is a typically juicy Rhone white. Vermentino is chosen for its light, fresh flavours, the late harvesting that it favours resulting in fine, dry, aromatic characteristics, with scents of fresh apple, almond and soft spices. The Muscat adds depth and a lingering aftertaste.

Rose - Domaine de Tavernel 2006 (75cl) Rose - Domaine de Tavernel 2006 (75cl)

It's fair to say that as Rose wine goes, this is the closest we've come to 'Southern France in a glass'. A superb fresh wine with just the right amount of depth and fruit, whilst retaining that tight, dry structure needed to chill well and serve as an aperitif or with summer salads, shellfish or chilled ratatouille.

Price:   £6.79 (Including: VAT at 17.5%)
