AOC Costières de Nîmes
Costières de Nîmes is an Appellation d’Origine
Contrôlée (AOC) in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France,
extending from Nîmes in the north, down through the Camargue to
the Mediterranean Sea, to the Petit Rhône to the west.
Previously Costières du Gard, the AOC was renamed Costières
de Nîmes in 1989.
The
Vineyard
Benefiting from a southern aspect, the sun and fresh sea winds create
a microclimate that is unique to the Château
l'Ermitage location.
As well as the ideal weather conditions, the land in this part of Languedoc
Roussillon is enriched by a stony soil deposited by the Rhône during
the Quaternary era. This combination is ideal for growing the famous grape
varieties of the Rhône Valley – Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre,
Roussane, Grenache Blanc and Viognier.
Wine
Production
With such favourable conditions, wine production at Château l'Ermitage
dates back over 200 years.
For the past 30 years, Michel and Jérôme Castillon have been
cultivating the 80-hectare vineyard, producing a high quality selection
of red, white, rosé and dessert wines.
Today, the château harvests and produces 4,000 hl of wine and the
quality is the result of the unique mix of region, grape variety and selection
and the all-important human touch, enhanced by fermentation process in
vinification tanks and new oak barrels.
Careful management and "savoir faire" are the tools of the Castillon
family trade, resulting in finely balanced wines with distinctive flavours.
History
The Château l'Ermitage site has an impressive history that dates
back over 1,000 years to the 9th century, when the Ermites of the ancient
Sainte Cécile d'Estagel's Abbaye owned the land.
The first wine cellar was built around 1800, though it is possible that
vines have been cultivated there for much longer.
