Most famous for its Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, California makes nearly 90% of America’s wine. Its winemaking history dates back to the 18th century, and today California boasts over 1200 wine producers in several sub-regions, including Napa, Sonoma, Russian River and Mendocino. Buena Vista, the first commercial winery was established in Sonoma in 1857. In Napa, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Mouton Rothschild to make Opus One with Paul Hobbs, who now has his own wineries in both Napa and Sonoma.
