Well known for its production of Port, the Douro region of Portugal is divided into three sub-regions, the Baixo Corgo, with the most vineyards, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. The Cima Corgo is the heart of Port production. The Douro has a huge selection of local grape varieties, and although 30 of these can be used to make Port, there are five that are considered to produce the finest Ports: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cao. The Douro also produces some great red and white wines.
