Piemonte lies at the foot of the Alps in north-west Italy and has the reputation of being one of Italy’s finest areas. In reds, it leads with the classic Nebbiolo grape in wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. The Barbera grape and Dolcetto are also superb (but cannot keep up with Nebbiolo). Also from Piemonte comes the Moscato d’Asti, a legend in sparkling wines. In still whites the Cortese grape makes here the fabulous Gavi wines. Piemonte also has the most DOCG’s - challenged only by Tuscany and Veneto.
