Pomerol is a small but amazingly popular area of the Gironde in Bordeaux found on the north west corner of St Emilion. It is all of 7.6 square kilometres with a mix of sandy and gravel soils. The main grape is Merlot with about 20% of Cabernet Franc and perhaps a smaller amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are noted to be perhaps the most instantly appealing of all clarets; gentle, rich, deep in colour, light in tannins with plum like, intense flavours. Unlike most other areas of Bordeaux there is no official ranking but names such as Château Petrus, Château Le Pin and others have deservedly put Pomerol very firmly on the wine map.
