Southern France with the areas of Languedoc, Roussillon and Provence provides a staggering range of good value wines. In the west, Banyuls with the Muscat grape provides superb Vins Doux Naturels as does Rivesaltes. The grapes of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault plus others give superb full-fruited reds. Whites from the Picpoul, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu (Macabeo), Marsanne, Rousanne and Sauvignon continue to improve and deliver loads of style. The Rosés, particularly of Provence, are just superb. Often very close to the Rhône in style, look out for up and coming areas such as the Ardeche, the Gard and Costieres de Nimes.
