    About

Chateau Beychevelle was included in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines (left bank) and is justifiably a 4eme Cru Classe or Fourth Growth. Considered one of the great Saint Juliens, it delivers consistently and regularly achieves scores in the 90's by acclaimed wine critic Robert Parker. Known as 'The Versailles of the Medoc', Beychevelle was founded in the 17th century. It has recently been restored to its original splendour and is now owned by Grands Millesimes de France (owners of several chateaux and wineries). With 90 hectares of prime 'terrior', their wines are amongst the most highly regarded in Bordeaux.

Amiral de Beychevelle is Chateau Beychevelle's second wine which, in good years, can outperform other vintages of the first wine. It was created in 1974 by the then owner Aymar Achille-Fould. Along with many of the great Chateaux, including Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Margaux, second wines were a means of bringing a greater choice at keener prices to wine-lovers under these powerful brands. Rather ironically however, many of these second wines now trade at prices well in excess of most people's budgets.

    Our Views

All the benefits and status of a Chateau Beychevelle (well, almost), without the hefty price tag. Would make a smashing gift. For current drinking, why not combine with a bottle of Chateau Beychevelle 2008 which will comfortably cellar until 2030?
