    About

There are three classifications of Saint Emilion wines which include Premier Grand Cru Classe (A), which incorporates the four top wines (Chateau Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Angelus and Pavie), Premier Grand Cru Classe (B), which includes Chateau Cannon La Gafelliere and Grand Cru Classe (not to be confused with 'Saint Emilion Grand Cru' which is simply an appellation). There are of course, numerous excellent wines from Saint Emilion which fall outside of these three classifications, though unlike the 1855 classification of Medoc wines, the Saint Emilion Classifications are reviewed and retasted every 10 years or so and the classification is confirmed or changed based on the quality of the wine.

As a vintage wine, Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere has great ageing potential and with the 1989 vintage awarded 90 points by Robert Parker, it is an important vintage for the winery. The Chateau is owned by Stephan von Neipperg, a proprietor with a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic farming techniques. The wine is a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% older vine Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon - a much lower percentage of Merlot than other Saint Emilions. It is known for being powerful, elegant, well-structured and long on the palate.

    Our Views

This is a lovely claret. Delivering a great balance of elegant fruit and soft tannins, it is a benchmark wine from the excellent 1989 vintage, which was awarded 5 stars by wine critic Michael Broadbent.
