Chateau Cissac has been in the same family for five generations and adjoins the well-known villages of Saint Estèphe and Pauillac. With 65 hectares under vine, it is owned and managed by Marie Vialard with winemaker, Laurent Saint Pasteur at her side. It is steeped in history and is reputed to have been built originally on the remains of a roman villa. We visited Chateau Cissac in 2009 and were immediately struck at how homely the estate is, with a rambling garden and a real sense of fitting in comfortably with the countryside and its surroundings. There was no fancy tasting room or air conditioned shop - this is a functioning winery that concentrates on what it is meant to do; make great Bordeaux wines.

Typical of 'left bank' wines (those appellations and wines that are produced on the left side of the river Gironde as you look at the map), Cissac is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with this accounting for 75% of the blend, Merlot being 20% and Petit Verdot 5%. The wines are expressive, full and well-balanced, with dark fruit and fine tannins, making them ideal with food. The 1994 has aged well and delivers soft, mellowed fruit flavours and lighter, more subtle tannins.

    Our Views

Cissac is a well-known, highly respected wine from this most famous of wine-making regions. For its age and condition, it offers really good value for money and would make a great birthday or anniversary gift or just a nice glass wine for lovers of well-made, mature Bordeaux.
