  • Condition

The condition of this 1952 vintage wine is just about as good as it gets for a wine of this age. The level is the very top of the shoulder and the label is excellent with just a little discolouring from its age. We seldom see wines of this age in better condition.

Founded in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, Chateau Cos d'Estournel was classified as a second growth within the 1855 Bordeaux classification. This took it one notch down from the likes of Chateau Latour, Margaux, Lafite and Mouton Rothschild and justifiably so. In the last 15 vintages alone, it has achieved scores in the 90's from wine critic Robert Parker with the 2009 scoring 100 points. The word Cos means a 'hill of pebbles', hence the name Cos d'Estournel. The winery has had several different owners over its history and was even owned by an English banker who bought it in 1852 and kept it for 17 years. From 1917 to 2000, it was owned by the Ginestet family, renown negociants in Bordeaux and today it is owned by luxury hotelier and entrepreneur, Michel Reybier.
