Now owned by Château Ducru Beaucaillou, this 'garagiste' wine has impeccable pedigree. When we tried it, it was elegant, still with good, light fruit and discernable, faint tannins.

    About

Saint Julien is an appellation and a village in Bordeaux, located on the left bank of the Gironde river. It sits right in the heart of some of the best wine making 'terrroir' in France with Saint Estephe, Pauillac, and Margaux as it's neighbours. This area is synonymous with fine wine and great vintages, with some of the world's most expensive wines coming from this area.

Château Hortevie was one of the best small estates in Saint Julien. The estate was owned by Henri Pradère and was tiny by Bordeaux standards, with a mere 3.5 hectares of vineyards. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine was matured in oak barriques for 12 months. The wines are stylish, elegant and refined with a subtle cedar wood-scented nose and a ripe, harmonious and balanced palate. These half-bottles came to us with great provenance (still sealed in superb original wooden cases) and are drinking superbly now.

    Our Views

Tasting note... light in colour with some sediment (as you would expect from a wine of this age). A great nose of sweet cherries and raspberries is followed by fresh, dry raspberries on the palate, light tannins and a really juicy (clean) finish. For a 1969 vintage wine, this is an astounding result and would be a delight for a lover of vintage claret.
