About
Characterised by deeper, slightly fuller, spicier wines than their neighbours, Mercurey produces the lion's share of red wines in the Cote Chalonnaise region with 32 Premier Cru vineyards. Established as an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Controlee) in 1932, it is, as with other red Burgundies, 100% Pinot Noir.
This Mercurey was produced by two brothers, Fabien and Louis Saier who were responsible for the promotion of the phenominal Clos de Lambrays from Premier Cru to Grand Cru in 1981 - no mean feat for land that had lain largely unused for 40 years! Situated about 8 km north west of Chalon sur Saone, Mercurey is typical of many villages in Burgundy, though its history dates back to Roman times and its name is thought to have come from the Roman God Mercury.
Our Views
Good Burgundy can age magnificently and remains our favourite wine. For the price, this Mercurey represents excellent value for money.
