Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape 1990 75cl
Region AreaChateauneuf du Pape
Grape VarietyRed Rhone Blend
Suberb, with excellent level and good label.
At Beaucastel, the wines are not dominated by the powerful Grenache. It's all about harnessing Grenache and sublimating it and taking the best from each plot, letting each grape variety express their very nature in order to make the best blend. Oak aging is not dominant; instead the authenticity of the grape varieties and terroir take the major roles. By continuing the tradition of the blending of the 13 historical varieties of Châteauneuf du Pape, Château de Beaucastel has an unmatched style, every year. It makes it a wine with that unique and exceptional mix of power, structure, elegance and freshness.
Two great back to back vintages for Beaucastel are the 1990 and 1989. The more developed 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries. Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profound Beaucastel that will last another 15-20 years. Wine Advocate, 96/100, 2003-01-01.
The depth and volume of fruit being quite extraordinary, the wine of the evening: for me, a perfect 100-pointer. John Singer, Decanter, 100/100
Beaucastel is as good as it gets and we have no hesitation in recommending this exceptional wine.
