    About

Beaune is one of the most famous wines in Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for Beaune was awarded in 1936 and it is primarily attributed to red wine (85%) with Pinot noir as the principal grape variety. Whilst there are no 'Grand Cru' vineyards within Beaune, there are several highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards with a number of parcels of land/small areas (known in French as 'Lieu Dits' or 'Climats') with Premier Cru status. These are often the flagship wines for the well-known Burgundy producers such as Louis Jadot and others.

Beaune is also the centre of the Burgundy wine business, with most of the largest négociants located in the town, as well as the Hospices de Beaune, which annually holds a charity wine auction. The Hospices de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse in Beaune. It was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor. The original hospital building, the Hôtel-Dieu, one of the finest examples of fifteenth-century Burgundian architecture, is now a museum (with the hospital is now housed in a modern building).

    Our Views

Burgundies from the 1979 vintage are hard to find and these look to be in excellent condition with the colour, level, capsule, etc. all fine. Note: we recommend standing the bottle upright for 24 hours before opening and then decant carefully.
