About
Eiswein is made from grapes that have been naturally frozen on the vine, making a very concentrated wine. They have enormous longevity and must reach at least the same level of sugar content in the must as their (usually cheaper) counterpart Beerenauslese.
From the town of Bingen-Budesheim, this Eiswein is made by Hildegardishof who are still making great wines today. Their Eiswein today is made with Gewürztraminer, though this 1980 vintage was made from Kerner and Rulander. Kerner is a cross between a red grape variety, 'Trollinger' and Riesling, whilst Rulander is a German synonym for Pinot Gris. Kerner is prized for its Riesling traits, fresh acidity and rich, fruity character. The wines are often more fragrant than Riesling and sometimes have light candied tones. Rulander tends to refer to a sweet style of Pinot Gris.
Our Views
Because of the higher sugar content, dessert wines age well and are a safe choice and as a gift for a wine lover, Eiswein is unsurpassed.
