    About

There has been some confusion over the name 'Moulin des Carruades' since the 2nd wine of Lafite is more commonly known and labelled as 'Carruades de Lafite'. The facts are simple, even though the managing director of Lafite calls it a 'long story'. Carruades was in fact first a domaine wine until the 20th century when it became the second wine of Lafite. Then in the 1960's, Lafite decided to change its name to Moulin des Carruades. However, this name didn't quite have the desired effect as certain sommeliers presented it as a special cuvee of Lafite Rothschild, superior to Lafite itself! So in the 1980's, the decision was taken to go back to Carruades de Lafite Rothschild (now just Carruades de Lafite). To make matters confusing, a few vintages were bottled with both labels - even though the wine was exactly the same.

Typical of left bank wines, Carruades is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also available for the blend. In fact 70% of Lafite's vineyards are given over to Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1961 vintage of Lafite was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the total production, only about a third of the wine produced is the second wine.
