Wildcard Chardonnay is a light straw/green colour with a bouquet of lime juice, citrus and passion fruit. Because it is unoaked, it has a really fresh crisp refreshing acidity that you would associate with drier grape varietes such as Sauvignon Blanc. This is supported by lovely, soft tropical fruit and peach flavours with a light and crisp finish.
In the late 1970's, when Peter Lehmann's former employer told him that they did not want any grapes from the Barossa one vintage, Peter had two choices; either deliver the news that would bankrupt numerous farmers, or set up a winery and start production himself. With this enormous challenge, he set up Masterton (after Sky Masterton in Guys 'n Dolls, Peter's favourite musical). Now something of a legend, the late Peter Lehmann is still considered by most in the industry to be the saviour of the Barossa and the Masterton winery was renamed after the great man himself.
The aim with the Wildcard range is quite simply good quality, value and a true representation of the grape involved, with a close eye on consistency from one vintage to the next.
The clean refreshing style is ideal with light meats like chicken or fish and cold dishes with salads. A clean wine full of flavour that makes for a thoroughly enjoyable glass of wine on its own too.
